MAJORDA BEACH (Goa): If one were to select a single Internet application that has created the most buzz over the past couple of years, without an iota of doubt, it would be the blog.

The application that lets people share their thoughts and opinions has in many ways heralded the emergence of semantic web or what we popularly call as Web 2.0.

Today millions of people across the globe blog almost daily, sharing their views on a plethora of subjects. This was the topic on which Prashanto Kumar Roy, group editor, Dataquest Group, CyberMedia, dwelt on in great detail during his presentation at CIOL C-Change 2007 event.

“There is a new paradigm shift happening on the Internet space and it is known as Web 2.0. In such a scenario, consumers (readers) are the producers (writers) and that is completely changing not only the way we perceive Internet but also how we with it,” said Roy.

The term blog has been derived from the words ‘web log’, that later turned into blog.

“Blogs can have different purposes and objectives, from travel to corporate, everyone can blog to convey their message to the world at large. Today around 50 per cent of the Fortune 500 companies in some way or the other encourage blogging by their employees. It is a phenomenon that has completely captivated the US and other markets,” said Roy.

He also went on to cite cases of how Boeing, HP, Google, and other such MNCs had created space or let their employees contribute to the online forums.

“At times, spreading a message through the blogs can be cheaper than other conventional medium like print or broadcast,” he added.

Roy also listed some of the key characteristics of corporate blogging in comparison private blogging. “Companies need to ensure that not only do they give some amount of liberty to their employees and also need to make sure that the content that is out up on the blogs is interesting and not the regular PR kind,” he added as a cautionary note.
