CHENNAI: Union Minister for communications and IT, Dayanidhi Maran, today said that IIT-Chennai would be setting up a Research Park by February 2007, which would at par with international standards. Addressing an Interactive Session on “Tamil Nadu: An Attractive Investment Destination” at the CII National Council Meeting Chennai, Maran said: “There are many exciting developments taking place in Tamil Nadu. The IIT-Chennai would be setting-up a Research Park at a cost of Rs 100 crores. This park would provide space for participating innovations by faculty, students and industry. The Park will be conforming to international standards and would be at par with such ventures in the UK and the US.” Stating that the present State Government was committed towards upgrading the infrastructure and facilitating investments in the State, which has already become a favorite destination for FDI, Maran, however, said “in this era of globally integrated markets, we need to make a little extra effort to retain the competitiveness.” “There are certain areas where we need domestic investments. The State needs an international institute to hone the IT edge on the lines of the IIIT. There is also a need to set-up a Tamil Nadu IT fund, which will catalyze the setting-up of start-up projects in Tamil Nadu,” he said in this regard. In this context, the minister said that a joint task force on IT, comprising of representatives of Government of Tamil Nadu, Nasscom, and CII would go a long way to hard sell Tamil Nadu domestically as well as internationally. “The task force may also consider branding of IT sector in Tamil Nadu in view of professional skills and aptitude of talent pool available here,” he suggested. © CyberMedia News
