BANGALORE: Indian telecom major Bharti Airtel ranked 10th in the BusinessWeek's annual ranking of top 100 global info tech companies. The company was ranked 19th last year and is the highest ranked Indian company in the list this year. Incidentally, Infosys that occupied the number 10 position last year tumbled to number 42 this time. The four Indian biggies on the list includes Tata Consultancy Services at 34 and Infosys at 42. Satyam Computer Services and Wipro were ranked 48 and 57 respectively. Cognizant Technology Solutions, another IT service player that has a significant presence in India is ranked 84, and also figures eight in the list of the fastest growing companies in terms of revenue growth. The company recorded 53 percent growth last year. The survey covered only those companies with revenues of at least $500 million. The companies were ranked on four criteria: return on equity, shareholder return and revenue growth (which were given equal weight) and total revenues (which was weighted). BusinessWeek describes Bharti as a highly innovative company that created telecom history when it farmed out its network management to experts Nokia and Ericsson. “Last year, Vodafone gave the company a vote of confidence by acquiring 10% mostly from early Bharti investor Warburg Pincus. This year, Bharti will offer its second overseas services after the Seychelles. It acquired a license for tax haven Jersey in the Channel Islands, and is looking for more. It also plans to spend $2 billion this year to double the size of its network and cover 50% of India's population, up from 40% currently,” the magazine said. On TCS, it said, “The company has become aggressive in the past year in doing deals and expanding its geographic reach. It's even doing better than its competitors in its standard service offerings of systems integration at the bottom end and consulting at the high end. And it's growing its employee base.” TCS ranks ninth in the list of profitable companies, with a return on equity of 49.7 per cent. The numero uno position went to Latin America's leading wireless phone provider America Movile, which was number one last year as well. America Mobile is a Mexican company. Except for Apple, no other US company figures in the top 10. Companies based out of Taiwan, Spain and India, figure in the top 10, showing the rise of tech giants in emerging markets. The presence of Indian companies is a clear sign of the visibility and growing acceptance of offshoring across the world. © CyberMedia News
