KANPUR: The central government plans to seek legislation for ownership of intellectual property during the monsoon session of parliament beginning next month.
Science and Technology minister Kapil Sibal announced this after inaugurating a unique prototype development unit in the Samtel Centre for Display Technologies at the IIT here.
The centre is set-up jointly by Samtel Group, Department of Science and Technology and IIT Kanpur. This is the first industry, academia and government partnership to develop technologies and products in the area of display for subsequent commercial utilization.
“Universities were not seen as a platform of innovation like this,” Sibal said. “There is a need for partnership to bring about innovation in technology in India. This is a model which need to be adopted through out the country.”
Speaking on the occasion, Professor Sanjay Govind Dhande, director, IIT-K, said, “The creation of the centre is testimony to the faith that Indian industry has on IIT-K, the excellence of our faculty and facilities and the values that are cherished in the academic environment of IIT-K.”
