CHENNAI: A team from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) led by its president R Seshasayee today called on the Tamil Nadu chief minister, Dr. M Karunanidhi and laid stressed for inclusive and sustainable growth for the State with focus on skill development and employment generation.
During the interaction with the chief minister, the CII president stressed on three key points for speedier economic development of Tamil Nadu.
Seshasayee said the State should look at large scale employment generation through skill development.
"There is a need to train and develop skills locally,” said adding that with the growth of automobile, construction, textile, IT and manufacturing sectors there was a looming shortage of skilled labor.
Second, Seshasayee said that there is a need to develop Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Tamil Nadu. These would also mobilize additional revenues for the State.
"The State Government could consider setting up Information Technology (IT) SEZs in Tier II cities like Coimbatore, Madurai and Trichy,” he said further.
Thirdly, Seshasayee also said that power could be a major issue for the State in the years to come. "There is a need to mobilize ultra power generation projects in Tamil Nadu.”
The other members of the team included N Kumar, former president, CII, Sanjay Jayavarthanavelu, chairman, CII and B Santhanam, former chairman, CII.
