BANGALORE: Computing major Dell Corporation today announced that it would increase its headcount in India to 20,000 from the present 10,000 in a span of three years.
“We have big plans in terms of R&D investment and also expanding our customer contact centers in India,” said Michael Dell, chairman, Dell.
He added that the strength of the engineering team in Bangalore would be upped from 300 to 600 in a year's time.
“The R&D division has progressed from software development to hardware design and development for our storage and server products.”
Dell said that around 145 invention disclosures had come out of the Bangalore R&D center.
The company is also hoping to set up a manufacturing facility in India, which would initially cater to local needs. However Dell said the company has not zeroed in on a location and is still in talks with various Indian states.
“We want to choose a state that can ensure rapid flow of materials, good logistics and infrastructure such as ports and clearance of goods and incentives,” he said.
According to sources, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are touted to be strong contenders for Dell's proposed plan.
Dell said that the company was recording good growth in business (over 40 percent year-on-year) in the country.
On the issue of directing more marketing efforts in the consumer segment, Dell said that that would happen when the company's manufacturing infrastructure is in place in India.
He said that Dell's direct business model had borne fruit in most markets across the world. “In the last three years, our business outside the US grew from $12 billion to $22 billion,” he said.
On the possibility of his company opting for AMD chips, Dell said that since the company had no exclusive agreement with Intel, it was open to having another partner.
