BANGALORE: Even while Indian companies score in terms of quality standards with various certifications and standards, instead of remaining complacent, they need to improve on it. Quality Guru Tom Gilb explained how to achieve this, during his keynote address on “Competitive engineering,” at the Nasscom Quality Summit in Bangalore.
“I see that Indian companies have fallen into the a trap. They need to focus their corporate energy on delivering results to customers in business terms,” he said. To do this, Gilb told companies to employ quantifiable and measurable goals that would provide clarity to both customers and the team about the deliverables.
“Instead of telling clients that you could “enhance the effectiveness” of their processes, you could help clients focus on their top ten most critical quantified requirements,” he said.
He also urged companies to estimate the numeric impact of their software design goals, a fact that is sorely lacking in India. To take quality a step further, Gilb suggested that companies base their customer contracts on the achievement of the top ten requirements.
“The idea of “Pay us when we prove success for you” would be an excellent competitive advantage in the market. Companies would earn money on the results delivered,” he said.
Gilb warned that though Indian outsourcing is still cheap, quality would continue to be a differentiator. He also stressed on the importance of stakeholder analysis while undertaking a customer project.
