BANGALORE: Laptop sales vis-à-vis desktops is estimated to touch 20 percent from the present 2-3 percent, by end-2007, said S Rajendran, general manager – sales and marketing, Acer India.
According to research reports, laptop sales have overshadowed desktop sales in the US. But, India has a long way to go with more than 90 percent of the computer users dependent on desktops, says the head of Acer's consumer product group.
“In India, we expect laptop sales to touch seven percent by the end of his year”, said Rajendran on the sidelines of a press conference to launch Acer's Ferrari 4000 laptop.
The Ferrari 4000 is based on the AMD Turion 64 – bit processor with ATI mobility and Radeon X700 graphics card, which enhances video streaming and film editing.
“It has exceptional connectivity features, with integrated 802.11 b/g WLAN, the latest security certifications and Acer's patented Signal UP technology”, said Rajendran.
Priced at Rs 99,999, the Ferrari 4000 has been designed in partnership with Scuderia Ferrari for whom Acer is an official supplier. Rajendran said it is encased with the same material (carbon fiber) used in Ferrari's Formula One racing cars, which is eight times stronger than steel, yet very light.
Acer's Grid Vista technology enables the user to work on four applications running simultaneously.
Having experienced a better response from the retail market for its earlier models, this Ferrari 4000 is targeted at the corporate as well as the retail consumer markets. Acer aims to sell about 300 laptops per quarter.
The Indian notebook market has seen a growth exceeding 140 per cent as compared to last year's 75 per cent with sales touching 2.2 lakh units.
