HYDERABAD: Red Hat has announced that Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 4 scheduled for release in February 2005 will support five Indian languages including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi and Tamil.
The new version will include productivity applications such as office suite with a word processor, spread sheet, presentation tool as well as a Web browser and an e-mail client. With the availability of these applications users can share the digitized text in local languages, across platforms, which support Unicode. According to the company, the Indian language versions will also feature the Gnome desktop with localized Red Hat tools for system administration, which make tasks like adding printers, connecting to Internet etc. possible through the local language interface. The installation guide will also be in local languages. At the summit on Localization recently organized by MAIT in New Delhi, Red Hat India director Javed Tapia presented the Beta version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 4 to Government of India ministry of IT secretary, Brijesh Kumar. According to Tapia, "Today computers are predominantly used only in English. With an average of nine PCs per 1,000 people, India stands at one-third of the global average of 27 PCs per 1,000 people. Availability of local language Linux desktop in India would act as a catalyst to change this ratio and increase the reach of the PC." He added, "Given that only a small percentage of our population communicates in English, it is imperative that software is available in Indian languages. The Red Hat local language desktops will definitely play a significant role in ensuring that the benefits of the IT revolution are realized by the millions of Indians."
