BEIJING: The world's number two cellphone maker, Motorola Inc., will integrate its business units in the years ahead to create a telecom giant focused on wireless mobility, its chief executive said.
"This concept of seamless mobility through seamless connectivity is going to drive this company over the next several years," Edward Zander, who became Motorola's chief executive officer in January, said in an interview in Beijing.
"I think you'll see more of that in the next several months and throughout the summer as we start working on our strategy."
Zander added that Motorola, which is in the process of spinning off its semiconductor business, is satisfied with its other business units, which include wireless infrastructure and electronics that run everything from phones to cars to cable TVs.
Cellphones make up the largest piece of the business, accounting for about 48 percent of sales in the first quarter.
"Conceptually, I like our portfolio," Zander said. "I like what we have today. I think they all fit, I really do. We are one of the world's biggest communications companies. If you look at where the world is going, everything we have kind of fits together."
