LOS ANGELES: Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. said it will bring the finals of the major international video game tournament it sponsors to the United States for the first time this October.
Samsung said the World Cyber Games Grand Final would be held in San Francisco from Oct. 4 to Oct. 10. A total of 700 players from 60 countries are expected to compete.
The company has sponsored the event since 2000 and for the last three years the finals were held in Korea, where competitive video gaming is a huge industry.
Online qualifying events for the U.S. and Canadian teams will begin this week and run through August, Samsung said. Offline qualifying events will also be held.
Among the games to be played in the various qualifying events are "Half-Life: Counter-Strike," "Warcraft III: Frozen Throne" and "Need for Speed: Underground," Samsung said.
The announcement was made during E3, the annual video game industry trade show in Los Angeles.
