“The project will be launched on two routes - one in the city and another on the Vijaywada road,” said Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation(APSRTC) MIS & IT Executive Director Dr S K Mathur.
These were the two routes on which the pilot project with 75 buses has been running since last one month. Designated Real Time Information System, it will not only inform about the arrival and departure time but the seat availability in the buses as well
The GPS equipment mounted on the buses has been procured at the cost of Rs 70 lakh. “50 percent of the cost has been funded by Ministry of Information Technology and CMC has provided the software to us,” said Mathur.
Explaining how it works Mathur said, “The GPS devices pass on the information to geo stationary satellites through SMS and the satellites in turn sends a signal to control station, Imlibun Bus Station in this case. From here, the information then makes its way to electronic boards. “Electronic display board will be installed at Koti and Lakdi-ka-Pul,” said Mathur.
Mathur added, “The drivers who have been trained to use the system have been provided with a set of hot keys installed in the buses to use in times of emergencies such as accidents and dacoities.”
APSRTC which has the credit of being the first state transport corporation with all its 212 bus depots computerized had introduced ticketing machines in the buses thus making the conductor redundant just months back. APSRTC is further looking at downsizing its manpower of 1,22,000 through computerization.
