MUMBAI: Availability, mobility, security. Apparently that seems to be the top-of-the-mind expectations of enterprises from their network. Bandwidth is still an issue but would not be for long. A combination of networking solutions is likely to yield most optimum performance for an enterprise.
These were some of the significant observations made by the panel deliberating on 'Business Ready Networks' at the ongoing Nasscom 2004. The panel comprised representatives from Cisco, BPCL, Govt of Gujarat's Dept of Science and Technology, Dr Reddy's Lab and Wipro Technologies.
The discussion, which touched upon a range of topics right from the strategic compulsions to issues faced by business networks and process efficiencies, also highlighted the diverse expectations of an ever-growing enterprise. "Our prime concern is to ensure a stable network for our huge and increasing operations," remarks BPCL's AK Kaushik.
WLAN, IP-based telephony and video-conferencing were given a thumbs-up by many in the panel. "With a rapid and multi-location expansion in the enterprises' user base, WLAN works out to be a very sensible solution," feels Wipro's Sunil Rangreji.
From a vendor perspective, Cisco's Naresh Wadhwa attempted at offering a very simplistic approach to the solution that his company offers. "Increased productivity and improved profitability is what our networking solution attempts at ensuring for the customers," adds Naresh. "Bandwidth should be available on a fly so as to improve one's time-to-market," opines Sachdev Ramakrishna of Dr Reddy's Lab. He further went on to elaborate how improvements in the networking solutions have helped his company file patents in the US and getting approvals from the FDA.
