Multi Modal Transport System (MMTS) steals a march over the existing railway announcement system. In the first phase, 12 out of the total of 22 stations of MMTS in Hyderabad will have centralised computerised announcement system in about a fortnight.
"The installation at Begumpet railway station - the first of the 12 stations - is currently on," said MD of Hyderabad-based VoiceGate Technologies India Pvt Ltd. VoiceGate has bagged this South Central Railway (SCR) turnkey project for all the 22 stations.
MMTS, the 50:50 joint venture between the Andhra Pradesh Government and Division of Signal and Telecommunication (SCR) will be covering a stretch of 43 km.
While the first phase covering a stretch of 29 km at the cost of Rs 69.65 crore went operational on August 9, the second phase connecting Secunderabad-Falaknuma is likely to be ready by October this year.
"Computerised announcements controlled centrally are time bound and remove the possibility of human error," said Mohammed. The 22 stations are divided into two projects of 12 and 10 stations.
The Secunderabad project, which is likely to be ready for inspection by SCR in about a fortnight, has a central system at Secunderabad, which is connected to the wayside computers at the stations. And all local stations, 'wayside' computers are connected to speakers and are programmed to handle LED displays.
"While the local stations continue to have their freedom to make local announcement, the basic schedule is centralised and is sent to all stations. Each station automatically picks up the relevant schedule information and relays the same," said Mohammed adding, "Just in case the link to central command fails, the local stations shift to local database and continues to make the announcements from the local database."
However, when the central command wants to make an announcement it sends an audio visual alarm to the local stations and gives a time lag of three minutes for them to leave the port free for the centralised announcements.
"It took six months and a team of five to fine tune the software," said Mohammed. "However, with enquiries from other railway zones pouring in it's well worth it," he added.
