I have Athlon 64 bit dual core based PC. I am running win XP SP2. Theoretically I should see double the performance w.r.t a single core? I don't see such a performance improvement? I think that the OS also should have been designed to use both the cores. Is my understanding right?

How is Multi-core architecture different from Multi-processor architecture? What is the performance advantage in each of the case? What is cost advantage to the customer? How will the OS performance benefit from the multi-core architecture? Are there any specific OS examples that have been tweaked specially to support multi-core architecture? Has there been any performance boost due to this? Will it help in "Zoning" of the Server hardware, similar/comparable to case of Sun-Sparc based hardware (SF24K etc)?
