BANGALORE: The onus of business continuity processes and disaster recovery should be borne not just by the CIOs but also the company business heads, felt CIOs at a panel discussion on “Criticality of business continuity in planning new IT infrastructure,” moderated by Eashwar Das Nair, Associate Editor, Dataquest. .
The panel members included GS Ravi Kumar, CIO, Gati Ltd, Sunil Kapoor, CIO, Fortis Healthcare, NC Kumanan, Head- information management, IDFC, N.Kailasanathan, VP & CIO, Titan Industries and Pronish Prakash Jain, Manager-Business Resilency and continuity services, IBM.
“Though business continuity process is a management responsibility, it is typically the CIO who is in the line of fire in case of a problem,” said Pronish Prakash Jain, manager, business resiliency and continuity services, IBM.
Stressing that resiliency involves more than just DR, Jain said that IT and business components would need to be analyzed to reach better levels of resiliency. “It has to be a shared goal that covers all layers like facilities, technology, applications and data, processes, people and at the strategy level.
V C Kumanan, head, information management, IDFC was of the opinion that it was important to have a DR plan and continuously update it according to business requirements.
Taking a different tack, Titan's VP and CIO Kailasanthan wondered if there was a lot of hype about DR since it was just a sub-set of business continuity. “ We don't talk about DR in manufacturing. We have to look at the issue holistically.” He said that the approximate cost of putting up a DR is around 25% of the originial production environment.
