BANGALORE: Delixus, an Indian software company registered in California, USA, has launched a version of Linux specially made for the Indian market. The company, which was previously into the realm of interoperability software, worked on the desktop version of Linux in their development center based out of Tumkur, Karnataka.
"We want this product to become the baseline of the Indian Linux market. We call it ‘India’s Linux’ and we have tried to make it as user friendly as possible for the market. To increase its market opportunity, we have also kept the initial price down to as low as Rs 500 per CD," said Abdul Hafiz Khan, CEO of Delixus.
He added that the company had started on the product after RedHat in the USA had said that they will soon be looking to the enterprise segment more and will be cutting down on their support activities for past version of their Linux versions in the SME space.
The company which has around ten distributors in the country at the moment will be increasing this base to around 100 in the next six months to aggressively push the product. The company also aims to build software exports from its home base of Tumkur to the tune of $50 million in the next three year time frame.
"We have also been working with the government and believe fervently in trying to bring IT to the less developed sections of the country. We are presently giving out free copies of Delixus Linux to public schools in the district of Tumkur. We will also be working on an e-governance project in Tumkur related to the rationalization of the insurance process. This is due for a big launch next month, " said Khan.
Khan added that though Delixus was committed to the open source community to a large extent, they will be looking to work on Windows applications also as per customer needs. The company said that they will also be looking at the China market eventually in a big way for their Linux desktop solution.
According to Khan, Delixus will be increasing its workforce in Tumkur to 60 in the next six months. The company is also considering an insurance and legal BPO in the same time frame in the district.
