In an epoch where myriad maverick corporations have adopted enterprise infrastructure technologies, GemStone Systems has cleverly crafted a niche for itself by offering its customers several enterprise infrastructure technologies in a mission critical atmosphere. With its expertise in not only enterprise level technologies but also in building enterprise class support models for global entities, GemStone is a gem in crowning jewel in the enterprise software business.

In an exclusive interview to Prasad Ramasubramanian of CyberMedia News, Sudhir Menon, director of engineering for GemStone Systems shares more insight on the company.

Excerpts from the interview.

CMN: What was the underlying mission and vision of GemStone Systems?

Sudhir Menon: It's a technology driven company. We started off in the object database company and have done very well. It's nice and the ability to manipulate complex systems today has gained a lot of importance. As a company, our customers are global leaders in their own right — independent software enterprises, data intensive enterprise solutions and systems integrators that build high performance.

CMN: What would you attribute your core competence to?

SM: Virtual and shared memory architecture was our core competence and if you look at companies, everyone wanted a data fabric - consuming data in real time. If you look at our releases — we have five releases in the past five years and our product combines distributive cashing with messaging capabilities. It's actually the backbone for most financial systems that exists today.

CMN: How do you distinguish your offerings from the rest of the herd?

SM: Well, our product is unique in the sense that it allows all the data into one coherent data, receive and subscribe notifications and allowing you to make decisions and have the applications when it comes in it most native form. As processing power increases, you get to run applications at a scale which you would not think of.

CMN: Could you enlighten us with your products portfolio?

SM: Our core offerings include GemFire — the Enterprise Data Fabric that offers a scalable, distributed platform to manage increasing volumes of enterprise data and streaming events with almost zero latency. This also enables the delivery of actionable information to the right application at the right time that is so very important.

If we were to talk about the GemFire suite, it has GemFire Enterprise, GemFire Enterprise- C++ and GemFire Real-Time Events in addition to GemStone Facets, GemStone/S and Technical Support.

Whether it is signal intelligence or compute grids or financial trading systems, GemFire allows you to take operational data and turns the database into two ways into the system of records. You don't need to scale your applications but you are putting it in memory.

CMN: Could you give us instances where your offerings have helped the customers overcome major issues?

SM: Sometime back, we had an enterprise license level deal with Bear Stearns. Bear Stearns is securities trading and a global investment banking firm. It was running a pilot program and they had one set of traders using Gemstone and others who had were not using it. The guys using Gemstone were making a lot of money and the head of the floor asked the administrator to deploy Gemstone across the floor and that's a real example for you.

CMN: With a legacy to carry forward, what would be the path ahead?

SM: See, today when enterprise architects sits down to put things in place, there is a data model and the distribution layer, which is typically messaging. Where we see ourselves is that in the future when an architect sits down to build a new application or refract the application, we should be in the scheme and that's important.
