NEW DELHI: RouteGuru, a start-up company working in the area of geographical information system (GIS), is betting big on 'textual landmark-based driving directions.'
With the innovative concept, the company aims at making navigation technology easily accessible, affordable, usable and valuable.
"RouteGuru pioneered the concept of "Textual Landmark-based Driving Directions. RouteGuru relates to the psyche of consumers, as in the way we navigate each other in real life, and provides driving directions that are more relevant to the Indian context," Avinash Agrawal, founder and CEO of RouteGuru told CyberMedia News.
He said that RouteGuru thrives upon innovative thinking with the strong focus on solving the navigational needs that are very much "local" for the country. "RouteGuru's vision is to make "finding and reaching" places simpler by making geographical information more consumable and accessible to common man. Being a consumer-service, RG intends to deliver services through mass-market channels like Internet and Mobile. For doing this, we will partner with other mobile operators and other consumer-facing businesses to distribute our services," he said.
The alpha version of RouteGuru is live for the Delhi-NCR geography at present, and the company aims at adding more cities in the near future.
"RouteGuru aims to be the best local consumer-oriented GIS service in India. Therefore, local language GIS is an important part of our strategy in Phase 2, when we expand our reach beyond the metropolitan cities," added Agrawal.
The GIS market in India is expected to be $ 10 billion in 10 years including enterprise and government projects. Domestic consumption of GIS in 2007 has been $ 400 million across enterprise and government channels. India is a hotbed for GIS consumption owing to the complexities in its landscape and large population. With the rise in the Internet and Mobile adoption and usage, rapidly changing landscapes, and fast-developing infrastructure, there is a huge need identified for easily accessible GIS information.
