Connected Weddings has adopted Ingres Database to run the premier wedding planning application for Facebook. New Gravity Ventures built the Connected Weddings site on reliable and proven open source software comprising Ingres Database, Red Hat’s JBoss Enterprise Middleware, and the Alfresco content management platform.

The site leverages the power of social networking to make wedding planning easier, more interactive, and less time consuming. The application enables couples worldwide to use the information they and their friends have on Facebook to build the invitation, guest list, seating chart, and create a customized, professional looking wedding site from which to interact.

For that task, New Gravity Ventures looked for a reliable but low cost platform that would foster innovation and selected Ingres Database as the perfect fit. The application infrastructure underlying the Connected Weddings application is comprised of all reliable open source technologies tailored for business-critical usage.

As every potential bride and groom knows, it is important that the wedding website be available 24 X 7 so couples can determine which members of their Facebook network to invite or plan the best seating arrangement for the wedding dinner. The necessary reliability was easily found in Ingres Database, which combines the flexibility of open source with the reliability of a commercially supported product.

Ingres works closely with two other leading enterprise class open source vendors, Red Hat and Rivet Logic, who together offer proven compatibility and top of the line support for a stack comprising Ingres Database, JBoss Enterprise Middleware, and the Alfresco content management platform.

New Gravity Ventures, creator of Connected Weddings and developer of web-based consumer applications for the US and India markets, was awarded a grant from Facebook’s fbFund to develop the wedding application. Conscious not to waste the grant money on unnecessary expenses, it looked for innovative solutions for this next-generation consumer application.

“Rivet Logic helped us build a stack using proven open source partner vendors, like Ingres and Red Hat, thus reducing costs without compromising reliability,” said Dan Kerzner, CEO of New Gravity Ventures. “New Gravity Ventures can achieve optimal ROI due to zero licensing fees, minimal compatibility testing, and is able to focus on content and innovation rather than software costs.”

Connected Weddings now has a platform that they can count on, will scale quickly, and is cost effective.

"Connected Weddings shows how a combination of commercial open source software can be integrated into a platform that provides all the benefits of proprietary alternatives, scalability, high availability and supportability, at a fraction of the cost,” said Emma McGrattan, vice president of engineering at Ingres. “Ingres and its partners show a new way of investing in IT. Startups like Connected Weddings do not have to compromise and can concentrate on delivering useful tools for everyone’s enjoyment. Couple that with taking the stress out of a wedding day, and you have a winning partnership."
