Communications chips estimated at $8.57bn in Q1-07

INDIA -- A new quarterly series on communications chip market initiated by iLocus revealed that during Q1-07 over $8.57 billion worth of communication chips were shipped by vendors worldwide.

Texas Instruments, Freescale and STMicroelectronics led the overall communication chip market with estimated market shares of 18.17 percent, 13.34 percent and 10.61 percent, respectively.

The following are the top five vendors in the communications chip industry for Q1-07: Texas Instruments, Freescale Semiconductor, STMicroelectronics, Broadcom and Infineon Technologies.

Within the communication semiconductor segment, the revenue contribution from the major segments was as follows: cellular (including WiFi/WiMAX/ Bluetooth) 32 percent, general networking 28 percent, broadband 22 percent, VoIP 9 percent, optical networking 7 percent, and other networking devices 2 percent. The iLocus report also mentions leaders in the various sub categories of the communication chip market.

Geographically, most of the revenue was generated from Asia Pacific (60 percent, ) followed by Americas (35 percent) and EMEA (10 percent) regions.
