Code of DTrace Utility to be released

NEW DELHI: Sun Microsystems will soon release the code of DTrace Utility of Solaris 10 to the open source community, said an online report.

This is being considered as the software maker's first step to open source Solaris 10 and will be followed by the rest of the operating system.

Dtrace Utility will be available under the its newly approved Community Development and Distribution License (CDDL). The dynamic tracing utility can monitor systems thresholds and helps customers prevent problems, trace problems and recover quickly after a failure or improve resource allocation. Said the report.

Sun has plans to open source the kernel, libraries and commands of Solaris 10 as well as features like trusted containers and the Zetabyte file system but will not release the code of third-party drivers.





According to the online report the Open Solaris will be ready by second quarter of 2006, the delay is because Sun is doing a detailed analysis of the millions lines of code of the Unix operating system. The report also confirmed that the Linux Application Environment (LAE), code-named Janus will not be made available in the first release of Open Solaris 10 operating system.
