Networking major Cisco Systems Inc announced a major market expansion

plan for India. This includes opening a Global Engineering

Development/R&D center in Bangalore and consequently increasing staff

headcount by over 250 percent in the next 12 to 18 months. Cisco is also

converting the company's representative office in India into a wholly

owned subsidiary-Cisco Systems India Pvt Ltd. The entire plan will involve

investments of over $20 million.

"The Internet market in India is developing very rapidly and we have
been extremely impressed with the rate of growth that the market has seen

in the last several quarters. We are making these investments because

Cisco believes that the market will continue to expand dramatically as the

telecommunications and ISP markets are deregulated," said Todd

Abbott, Managing Director (Asia), Cisco Systems.

The development center in Bangalore, the first such center in Asia, will
be involved in development and testing of Cisco IOS and network management

software, ASICs and other technologies like ATM and VOIP.
