USD solution helps service providers build a foundation for cloud services, while they transform the delivery of consumer and business applications to any place and device.

Aimed at service providers, the new solution combines the power of Cisco’s Data center portfolio and Unified Computing architecture with the Internet Protocol Next Generation Networks (IP NGNs).

“The USD architecture is an extension of unified computing and data center technologies that enable service provider to monetize services and revenues,” said Rajesh Chainani, country director – Service Provider, Cisco Systems (India) Pvt. Ltd.

“Today there’s high level of convergence of data and content, which requires more capex and opex on part of the service providers in reaching out customer’s demand.”

According Chainani, most of content and data are housed at the data centers by the service providers. However, the biggest dilemma for them is how to monetize services to customers and how to lower the operational cost.

The operational cost includes power consumption and cooling, along with asset utilizations. But, from the networking and data center prospective, Cisco has led evolution with data centre 3.0 and virtualization technology, which has helped to consolidated IT infrastructures and networks.

“With consolidation of LAN and SAN, using VMware virtualization technology and powering with unified computing, the service providers can offer services in form of cloud services, which over all reduces cost of operation as well as monetize services to consumers,” Chainani explained.

Moreover, Chainani also pointed that the next big thing is Inter Cloud - from one service provider to another service provider - which can help to utilize resources and lower the cost too. He added that service providers, and also large enterprises, can save on space, cooling and assets and overall it helps to save up to 30-35 per cent on capex and opex.

From service provider’s stand point, USD enables an end-to-end service platform that merges the virtualization platform with computing and networking capabilities.

Further it helps service provider to lay foundation to secure and scalable cloud computing. Based on SaaS model, here service provider can offer cloud services as software as a service, platform as a service and infrastructure as a service.

Cisco is targeting at tier-I carriers or service providers for USD solution, including banking and telecom sector as potential market. From the company’s point of view, Chainani stated that new solution will provide an incremental revenue growth as we are at an incubation phase.

However, the demand and utilization of the USD solution will be more visible once the 3G and 4G service are rolled in India.
