SAN JOSE: Cisco Systems Inc., maker of Internet networking equipment, said
Friday that it has agreed to buy CAIS Software from CAIS Internet Inc. for $170
million in cash and Cisco stock.
CAIS Software offers software applications for companies to manage high-speed
Internet services in hotels, apartments, airports and office buildings.
The business is expected to complement Cisco's DSL, Ethernet, cable and
wireless network services.
Cisco said it expects to record a charge of up to 1 cent a share for
purchased in-process research and development of the 65-employee CAIS unit.
