The middle-class is the worst affected by corruption. How and when can one approach the Lokayukta for help? Former Karnataka Lokayukta Justice N. Santosh Hegde personally clarifies our doubts. Read on to know more
BANGALORE, INDIA: ''Our middle-class has entertained a hatred against corruption, but the people are unable to take action because they are directionless'' said Justice N. Santosh Hegde, former Lokayukta of Karnataka, in an interview with CIOL on Thursday.
Yes, we all face some kind of injustice or corruption every day of our lives. So, when we see wrongdoings by someone more powerful than us, what can we do about it? Who will come to our rescue? Enter the institution of Lokayukta.
''Lokayukta is an institution to oversee good governance. If public servants commit a mistake or if a citizen suffers from inaction on the part of government or authorities, one can approach the Lokayukta office and action will be taken,'' said the former Lokayukta.
Justice Hegde believes that the Lokayukta can do wonders for the poor. ''People can get their old age, widow and physically-disabled pensions. Corruption taking place in government offices can be rectified by the Lokayukta. It can also oversee the building licence issues, be it legally permissible building licence getting delayed or denotification of licences of illegal buildings,'' he added.
However, he made it very clear that family property disputes do not come under the jurisdiction of the Lokayukta. Only if a government official misuses land meant for other purposes, can they take action. He also gave an example of former minister Katta Subramanya Naidu, who was arrested in the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) scam.
So, how can one go about filing a complaint with the Lokayukta? ''You can visit the official website of the Karnataka Lokayukta (http://bit.ly/p9i6kR), download the forms available, fill it up and submit it,'' he said. The website also carries phone numbers of other officials, information on the Prevention of Corruption Act, Right to Information Act and much more.
Justice Hegde has exposed major irregularities by the government and continues his fight against corruption by being a core member of the Anna Hazare team. His fight against injustice is commendable and an inspiration to all.
That said, do you feel the Lokayukta lacks a good leader after his retirement? Do you believe that the Karnataka Lokayukta is as effective as it used to be? Do let us know your views.
