NEW DELHI: With the completion of the acquisition of StorageTek, Sun Microsystems has unveiled its expanded data storage portfolio.

Sun's storage business has grown over the years to contribute one-third of Sun's revenue and employee base.

StorageTek has now become a part of Sun's Data Management Group (DMG), formerly named Sun's Network Storage Group (NWS).

The StorageTek acquisition is expected to increase Sun's business coverage in terms of customers, products and support and service infrastructure. For storage products the company would continue with the StorageTek brand name.

Sun Microsystems DMG strategy and planning VP Randy Kerns said, “With the StorageTek acquisition, Sun now has the widest storage product portfolio including solutions for archiving, primary storage, SAN infrastructure and software. We also plan to tie identity management (IDM) into storage and would be starting with providing IDM for accessing the file system.”

He added, “We would continue to develop and deliver key products and also come out with scheduled enhancements to existing products. We also plan to augment our portfolio to meet the customer needs. This would be done through partnering and acquisition. We would also undertake application integration. In the long run, we plan to develop advanced solutions to improve how information is managed to address the cost and scaling issues.”

The company also announced that according to IDC, Sun Microsystems India's External Unix Storage revenues grew by 178 percent in India in the period June 2004 to July 2005 (Sun's Financial Year) from the corresponding period in 2003-04. With this, Sun Microsystems India has leapfrogged to become the joint No.1 player in this storage market.
