NEW DELHI: Global telcos are looking forward to adopt metro ethernet networks to offer better voice and data services to subscribers.

Nortel Networks has introduced the Metro Ethernet Networks (MEN) in the Indian market to brace metropolitan area networks.

Anup Changaroth, director, Asia, Wireline Networks, Nortel Networks, said that most of the global telecom companies have adapted the MEN to boost their service offerings.

“With the Ethernet networks service providers can it as means fr delivering the most critical high-bandwidth services such as IPTV, mobile video and business connectivity services,” he stated.

He said that two important customers of Nortel in the service provider segment are Shanghai Telecom and British Telecom, who had deployed Ethernet network.

On the Indian telephony market Changaroth said that to offer high-bandwidth applications the Indian telecom players are also looking forward to deploy the Ethernet networks.

“The explosion of high-bandwidth video and data applications is increasing in demand now and to offer better services to subscribers the operators require faster networks which Ethernet can offer. The operators are looking forward to it,” he said.

He said that with huge competition the revenues of the service providers going down, Ethernet deployment helps reducing total cost of ownership. “We are already in talks with most of the telecom majors in India. This would also enable high-speed data transfer once the 3G services are launched in India. Video is the next driver in the industry.”

He also said that the small and medium enterprise is also the growth driver for Ethernet market.

Changaroth added that service providers want to maximize Ethernet not only for services but also as an infrastructure for value added services and applications.

According to Infonetics Research, 86 per cent of service providers preferred high customer demand for Ethernet services and the Ethernet services market is expected to reach $22.5 billion worldwide by 2009.
