BANGALORE: The wireless phone subscriber base in India, which has already crossed the 100 million mark, will more than double to touch 265.2 million by 2010, says In-Stat in its research study titled 'Achieving Profitability in the Indian Wireless Market'.
The report by the high-tech market research firm predicts that providers will continue to rake in profit while foreseeing a downward trend in Average Revenue Per User (ARPU). The report said ARPU levels have declined significantly. ARPU in the country is one of the lowest in the world and is expected to decline further to $5.60 by 2010. Downward trend in tariff structure for subscribers due to intense competition is lowering the ARPU, the report says.
Under-penetrated market, low tariff structure, increasing ability of the population to afford mobile services, and rapid network expansion by operators are facilitating the growth in the country.
The report found that leading operators Bharti Airtel, BSNL, Reliance, Hutchison, and Idea Cellular accounted for about 84 per cent of the subscriber base in 2005.
