NEW DELHI: Sun Microsystems is targeting the SME market for its storage solutions, and has now completed its portfolio offering with the launch of Modular Disk Low-Cost Array.

Talking to CyberMedia News here, Sivasankaran Lakshminarayan, director, (storage practice) at Sun Microsystems India said the introduction of Modular Disk LCA will also have security, enhancements across entire disk, tripe and next-generation product lines running Solaris Operating System.

“We have completed our portfolio offering in the storage space, with the launch of Sun StorageTek ST2500 Low Cost Array (LCA), which is Sun's first serial-attached SCSI (SAS) storage array, the newest member of the modular disk storage family that works with the Solaris(TM) Operating System (OS) and other heterogeneous data center environments,” he said.

Stating that Sun will be targeting at the growing small and medium enterprises (SME) segment for the new offering, Lakshminarayan said that Sun was using innovation and open standards to reach out to new customers also in the explosive Web 2.0 market.

“SME and Web 2.0 companies require applications that work with low-cost storage and which horizontally scale. Hence we have priced the products at less than $ 10, 000, as we feel it would be the right entry point for these customers to use industry-standard platforms to support their growing businesses,” he said further.

Lakshminarayan was of the view that the IT investment in the SME market was changing in recent times, as the companies wanted solutions which are being implemented by mid-range enterprises. “Even the channel partners and system integrators are changing their business module, by providing value-additions on top of the solutions we provide,” he said, stressing on the importance of channel partners in Sun’s market strategy.

“Sun will be targeting at the manufacturing, media and retail companies, within the SME market as we see a huge potential for our products and solutions,” Lakshminarayan added.

Sun Microsystems also announced next-generation data management capabilities for its industry-standard storage portfolio that include the addition of partitioning capabilities to its StorageTek SL8500 enterprise tape library and secure encryption to its Sun StorageTek T10000 FICON tape drive.
