NEW DELHI: Alcatel Research Center will sell the IP of the WiMAX product, which is under research and is targeted to be available by 2007.
The product would act as a transmitter for receiving WiMAX services.
R. Poornalingam, chairman, C-DoT Alcatel Research Center said that once the government allocates the frequency for WiMAX, the center would come up with the product.
“The product is under development and would be ready by April 2007. But once the government decides on the frequency we can come out with the product. This will be the first WiMAX product manufactured in India,” he said.
According to Poornalingam, 2.5 GHz frequency is suitable for roll-out of the technology as it is cost effective. 2.5GHz is globally accepted by service providers. He also said that the 700MHz is suitable for rural areas as it is 60 per cent cheaper compared to 2.5 GHz.
Speaking about the frequency allocation by the Ministry of Information Technology, Poornalingam said that the government is taking active initiative on addressing the issue.
“We will sell the IP of the product as we are a research organisation and will not directly market the product. The product will cost less than USD 100,” he added.
Alcatel and the Center for the Development of Telematics (C-DOT), the Indian Government's telecom technology development center, had signed a joint venture to design and develop products related to broadband wireless. The company, called CDOT Alcatel Research Center, is being 51 per cent owned by Alcatel and 49 per cent by C-DOT.
