NEW DELHI: Finance Minister P Chidambaram today asked the Department of Telecom (DoT) to constitute a committee for unified rate structure.
While presenting the Union Budget for 2007-2008, the finance minister asked DoT to commission a study for working out a unified structure for the telecom sector. For a long time the telecom companies have been demanding a unified tax structure.
Currently the total levies in the telecom sector, including the annual revenue share, paid to the government stand between 28-30 per cent. The companies have been unhappy about the revenue share paid to the government and been claiming it to be high.
“I will request DoT to constitute a committee and come up with the recommendations for the unified rate structure,” Chidambaram said.
