BANGALORE: Finnish handset major Nokia has teamed up with Yahoo! to roll out instant messaging (IM) services to its customers in Delhi, according to Nokia India marketing director, Devinder Kishore.

Acccording to sources, talks are on with a cellular operator (name withheld) to launch the services. Instant messaging enables desktop-like IM experience on mobile phones and is fast becoming a popular  value added service in developed countries. However, India has been slow to launch such services as it requires high bandwidth capabilities.

Kishore was speaking on the sidelines of a press conference to announce its 'Defend your Turf' campaign--a country-level street football championship.  Apart from sports, Nokia in a bid to 'connect' with the large youth population of the country is investing in marketing initiatives involving music and fashion.

The company has set aside funds to the tune of $150 million to expand network infrastructure and roll our new handsets.  Its new manufacturing facility in Chennai will employ 1600 people by this year, said Kishore.

The company also plans to invest in the development of local language content to increase scope for mobility in rural areas. It is working on nine Indian languages with special focus on Marathi and Gujarathi.
