NEWDELHI: India has become the fifth country to register its name in the 100 million mobile club. The country’s gross subscriber base has now touched almost 150 million. The key factors that has fueled the growth are continues decline in tariffs and improved affordability of service and handsets.

On the occasion of achieving the milestone, Union minister of Communication and Information Technology was felicitated by the major telecom associations in New Delhi. Maran praised the contributions of the mobile industry and assured the government’s support for the mobile sector. He congratulated the industry on its in-principle announcement of the setting up of an ombudsman or a consumer forum to address consumer related issues.

Association of Unified Telecom Service Providers of India (AUSPI), Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), Indian Cellular Association (ICA) and Telecom Equipment Manufacturers’ Association (TEMA) were the bodies that felicitated Maran.

Others countries who figure in the 100 million club are China, USA, Japan and Russia. Two years back India’s telephone subscriber base was only 75 million.
