"IMS is 'holy grail' for communications"
How is mobile Malware different from Internet Malware?
Conceptually, malware is similar for both. There are IP devices with a host OS. These OS’s have vulnerabilities that can be exploited by malicious users. However, initial malware has been in the form of viruses that require the assistance of the phone user to install. Installation of Symbian .sis files for example.
Yet, as mobile devices get more sophisticated, the accessible vulnerabilities will continue to grow and eventually the entire suite of Internet Malware will become a problem. Worms, Trojans, Buffer Overflows, Injection and Tampering attacks, etc. Effective security devices must be prepared to handle this malware over multiple threat vectors.
What are the levels of protection required in a mobile environment?
The primary threat protection points are on the handsets themselves, at the access point from the subscribers, in front of application servers and at peering points and internet egress.
Each of those points requires a level of protection that encompasses the entire OSI model, from Layers 2 all the way through 7. Application-based security is also extremely important and should not be overlooked.
Is the security software equipped to handle multiple entry points in a mobile device?
Most smartphones and quite a few mobile phones are capable of transmitting and receiving information through Bluetooth, infrared or through MMS downloads. Fortinet’s FortiClient Mobile software is able to protect the mobile device against all these modes of entry.
In addition, many devices today are PC’s with 3G network cards installed. This requires the mobile operator to consider a whole new class of device that requires application-based protection within the network.
What are the mobile platforms that Fortinet caters to?
Fortinet’s FortiClient Mobile software for mobile phones and PDAs can run on Symbian and Microsoft Windows Mobile platforms.
Fortinet defines mobile platforms into 4 key functional areas - Handsets, Access Peering Applications
The Fortinet product portfolio in the mobile space includes technologies to address security at all points. These technologies include:
FortiClient Mobile for Symbian and Microsoft Windows Mobile.
FortiGate Multithreat Security Gateways which include network based GTP security, MMS security, content filtering and FW/IPS capability.
FortiMail SMTP gateway which provides SMTP based security primarily focused on enforcement of Acceptable Use Policies to prevent subscribers from propagating SPAM/Viruses.
