BANGALORE: India is a hotbed for wireless technology innovation and one of the fastest growing wireless markets, said Franz Fink, senior vice president and general manager, Wireless & Mobile Systems Group, Freescale Semiconductor Inc., during the opening session at the Freescale Technology Forum.

Addressing a large gathering of designers, developers, partners and customers at the Forum in Bangalore, Finz stressed the growing importance of India as a wireless market. Twenty-five percent of its billion-strong population will be using mobile phones in few years’ time, he added.

The provider of embedded solutions is mainly targeting the India and China markets, where it sees unprecedented growth opportunities. With growing demand for cheaper mobile phones in these markets, Freescale is investing heavily to bring out products with disruptive point solutions, single chip, power management, common stack and application environment. It is looking to work with Indian carriers to provide complete platform solutions as well.

The company invests US $1.6 billion in R&D annually, and is one of the largest providers of wireless access solutions globally. Connectivity and seamless mobility are the biggest drivers of its growth. Fink noted: Seamless mobility is becoming a reality for converged devices. Soon, anybody, anywhere, will be able to access anything at anytime.

Freescale’s ZigBee-compliant platform enables home automation with a mobile device. The technology can be used extensively in monitoring industrial automation, control and sensing applications. The company plans to showcase its next generation ultra-wideband (UWB) technology with higher speed and lowest power consumption in 2006.

With a spotlight on enabling ‘high performance, low power for mobile convergence devices’, it is focusing on EDGE and UMTS, with plans to bring out a product in 2007. Mobile multimedia multimedia process engineering with low-power consumption and Smartspeed technology which offers 3GHz performance at 1/6th power consumption and replaceable chip packaging, are some other important areas of investment in the wireless arena.

The company also sees a big market for the automobile industry in India and China. It is working towards creating breakthrough technologies for the automobile industry with focus on innovation and development of the autonomous car.
