BANGALORE, INDIA: With a pricing sweet spot in the sub-Rs 35,000 range, Hewlett Packard (HP) on Wednesday announced the launch of its ProLiant ML115 x-86 server aimed at the small and medium business segment. Powered by the second-generation AMD Opteron 1000 series processors, customers have the option of going for single or dual core processors.
Speaking at a press briefing here, Tony Parkinson, vice president and general manager, Industry Standard Servers (ISS), said, “India is one of the fastest growing markets and the third biggest in the for HP in the Asia Pacific. We have sold around 1,00,000 units in India.”
He added that HP’s design teams are working closely with customers to understand and make sure the company designs servers that are suited to customer requirements in the Indian and Chinese markets. “We found that customers in the SMB segment that are price conscious are not interested in feature sets yet don’t want to compromise on quality. For example, they don’t want the remote management option and so we have made that an optional feature," he said.
The company is targeting first-time users of servers, home users and also segments such as retail, banking and insurance, government, SME, micro verticals and dealer networks of automobile and FMCG. Parkinson said that the entry level single server business is falling in markets like North America but is doing very well in the Asia Pacific market. HP leads the market in the x86 server market in unit shipment.
Around 60 per cent of HP’s ISS business, both in India and globally, is derived from the SMB segment. The new range of servers are around 10-15 per cent cheaper than HP's previous product line.
