BANGALORE: Seagate, the largest manufacturer of hard disk drives, is looking to the consumer electronics market to drive its growth in the Indian subcontinent. This is in consonance with the world-wide trend in the consumer electronics market for HDDs.

According to a study by ACNeilsen Research, revenues for HDDs from consumer electronics is predicted to rise from $4.3 billion in calendar year '05 to $14.3 billion in CY'09.
Seagate announced new hard drives and solutions for entertainment, consumer electronics, and computing – to support the growing demand for digital content in the consumer market.

Additionally, India becomes a very important market due to the presence of a large number of players in the embedded services space catering to the electronics manufacturers, said Rajesh Khurana, country manager, India and SAARC countries.

Given this trend and the strategic benefit in being close to customers, will Seagate set up an R&D center in India? Though not denying, he however, said, "We are evaluating the option (to set up an R&D center) but, there are a lot factors that have to be considered." When asked to elaborate on the factors, Khurana chose not to comment on it.

Seagate launched ten new products, which include--1.8-inch, 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch hard drives with up to 750GB of capacity for consumer electronics, notebook and desktop PC and enterprise applications. This includes hard drives for gaming, handheld devices, DVRs, and other consumer electronics applications.
