India to get its first cyber lab

BANGALORE: Nasscom has joined hands with the Bangalore Police and Canara Bank to open the third Cyber Lab in the city, the first public-private partnership initiative in India.

The Bangalore cyber lab is expected to train more than a thousand law enforcement officials, bank officials, prosecutors and military police officers on cyber crime, cyberforensics and other related topics. Of the thousand trainees, the lab expects to train at least 750 police officials every year.

The cyber lab is situated at the headquarters of the Corp of Detectives in Bangalore, which also houses the Cyber crime police station.

Canara Bank has come forward with a funding of Rs 40 lakh.

Speaking to CyberMedia News, Sanjay Vir Singh, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Economic Offenses, Corp of Detectives (COD), Bangalore, said that besides obscene mails, the station has seen a rise in cases of attackers hacking into enterprise servers to steal code.

Nandkumar Saravade, director, cyber security and compliance, Nasscom, said, “In addition to strengthening the legal infrastructure, creating an effective enforcement framework and continuing the ongoing training of enforcement authorities, and creating awareness on the impending threat of cyber crime is equally vital. It is with this objective that Nasscom has been working towards further strengthening the security environment in the country, through direct and public private partnership initiatives.”

He added that Nasscom instituted a Cybercop award to recognize the efforts of enforcement personnel and would increase the award categories this year.

In his keynote, Srinivasan KR, IPS, DG and IGP Karnataka Police, said, “Bangalore has emerged as an IT hub, and it is critical for law enforcement officials to equip themselves with functioning of IT BPO industry to enforce law and order and check any possible cyber crime incidents. There is both a need and awareness among citizens about cyber threats and security measures. Initiatives like the Cyber lab will go a long way in ensuring confidence of the industry, as well as citizens.”

Nasscom plans to open the fourth cyber lab in Pune soon.

The Bangalore cyber lab is third one in India, after those in Mumbai and Thane.
