NEW DELHI: The awarding of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s (BSNL) 45.5 million GSM lines contract came under a cloud on Tuesday with the Delhi High Court barring the PSU from awarding the contract till the next hearing.
The US telecom major Motorola, which was disqualified in the bidding process on the grounds of technical ineligibility, had challenged the PSU on October 9. The court today ordered BSNL not to award contract till the next hearing, which is scheduled to be listed on November 16.
In the bidding process last month the Swedish firm Ericsson had emerged the lowest bidder followed by Nokia. The lowest bidder (Ericsson) would be awarded 60 per cent of the tender while the rest, 40 per cent would be awarded to the second lowest bidder (Nokia). Motorola and ZTE were eliminated on technical grounds.
However, the PMO was also forced to sought clarifications from Department of Telecom on the tender, raising issues related to transparency.
