MUMBAI: Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom is migrating its international circuit-switched infrastructure to a Nortel VoIP next-generation network (NGN) capable of providing customers with advanced voice, data and SIP-based multimedia services.
Initially being deployed in Taipei, Kaoshiung and three overseas locations by the third quarter of 2006, Taiwan's first international NGN will simplify
business for Chunghwa Telecom while supporting its drive to enhance competitiveness by enabling new revenue generating services, optimizing service delivery capabilities, and reducing operational costs.
According to the company, the NGN will also create a platform for future deployment of Nortel's SIP-based IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) service delivery architecture. IMS allows all real-time voice, video and multimedia collaboration services to be interoperable across any type of network, regardless of device.
"Nortel is the sole provider of VoIP NGN solutions across Chunghwa Telecom's northern, central and southern region branches and we are now bringing these same IP-based, converged network capabilities to its International Business Group," said Jackson Wu, managing director, Taiwan, Nortel.
"In addition to 100 percent VoIP NGN market share with Chunghwa, we are also playing a key role in its transformation into a fully IP and IMS-enabled international voice, data and multimedia service provider."
The Nortel VoIP NGN solution for Chunghwa Telecom is based on the Nortel Communication Server (CS) 2000-Compact, a carrier-grade superclass softswitch supporting industry-standard VoIP protocols and providing cost-effective out-of-territory expansion into geographically dispersed markets.
