CHENNAI: Reliance Communications today said that it was exploring possibilities of offering mobile data services, especially Internet, in its new facility of “Southern State Mobile PCO” on buses.

Talking to CyberMedia News, after launching the Mobile PCO, which works on the WLL-FWT technology, and placed inside a bus to enable travellers to make local/STD/ISD calls even while on the move, V G Somasekhar, CEO of Reliance Communications said that it is in the long run that the company was looking at providing a host of services, through the new platform.

“Reliance Communications network is available in more than 1600 towns in Southern India, combined with Reliance Infocomm's 80, 000 km of terabit fibre optic network,” he said adding that this infrastructural strength along with its CDMA 2000 1X EVRC technology supported unlimited and uninterrupted and exception voice clarity and congestion free network.

Talking on the new launch of having PCO booths in buses, Somasekhar said that the mobile PCO is targeted at the tourists especially foreigners to communicate thus making huge savings on roaming charges. The initial project ill have about 100 numbers of interstate buses having the mobile PCO unit, which works on a prepaid revenue-sharing formulae with the transport operators.

Local calls made from the Mobile PCO would be charged at Rs 2 a minute, and NLD calls at Rs 4 a minute. The ILD calls would range from Rs 10 to Rs 15 per minute.

The new system also acts as a Vehicle Tracking System (VTS) for tour and travel operators and helps in enormous cost savings in VTS infrastructure.
