BANGALORE: MindTree Consulting, a leading provider of Bluetooth-based IPs and solutions, has launched its UWB program aimed to create licensable cores of the digital MAC (Media Access Control) and PHY (Physical) layers of the UWB technology stack.

UWB wireless technology will enable multimedia equipment, such as a DVD player, to wirelessly ‘talk’ to a user’s TV set and audio system to beam high-definition video and audio, liberating the home entertainment system completely from wires. With the ability to support data rates at 480 megabits per second in the 1-10 meter range, low transmitter power and low cost of implementation, UWB is the latest addition to the exciting world of wireless personal area network technology (WPAN).

S. Janakiraman, president and CEO, R&D Services, MindTree Consulting, said: "MindTree has maintained its leadership position in the Bluetooth space by helping its customers achieve their design goals using its best-in-class solutions. MindTree is now poised to build significant market lead through its UWB program, which is aligned with the WiMedia Alliance. We will have elements that can be showcased as early as January 2006. This is a time-bound and resource-committed program that will deliver robust, standards-compliant and tested, licensable building blocks to our customers and partners. Going forward, we will continue to strongly invest in our UWB and Bluetooth technology initiatives to leverage MindTree’s world-class product realization capabilities in the short-range wireless domain."

Vinod Deshmukh, CTO and executive vice president, R&D Services, Mindtree, added: "MindTree is keenly looking forward to collaborating with silicon players in the UWB space in development, certification and marketing of solutions. We believe such an initiative will accelerate the proliferation of this exciting technology, help reach early standards agreement and certification for technology and products and build the base for sound market exposure. By building highly successful partnerships, MindTree has demonstrated that such alliances have been beneficial for silicon majors to reduce time-to-market, build flexibility and options in their offerings, and deliver fully tested and robust products to customers.

MindTree’s R&D services combines expertise in semiconductor IP, hardware and software to offer complete product realization services. Backed by strong domain expertise in ASIC/SoC Design, IP development, board, system and embedded software development, MindTree addresses the needs of the communications, wireless, industrial automation and consumer appliances industries to create next-generation products.

Its licensable technologies help customers achieve cost and time-to-market benefits. MindTree offers one of the most complete suites of Bluetooth-based solutions in the industry, which includes the EtherMind 1.2 Upper Layer Stack and Profiles, and the BlueWiz 1.2 Baseband Controller.

It is slated to soon announce the availability of its Bluetooth 2.0 EDR offering. MindTree has sold more than 25 licenses of its IPs in the last four years. Its Bluetooth silicon and software IP is shipped as a standard embedded option in the products of global silicon vendors.
