China launches new communication satellite

BEIJING, CHINA: China has launched a new communication satellite that will provide high-quality voice communication and data transmission services, officials said Monday.

The Zhongxing-1A communication satellite was launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in southwestern Sichuan province after Sunday midnight, Xinhua reported.

The satellite, lifted by a Long March-3B carrier rocket, blasted off at 0033 hours Monday and successfully entered the preset orbit, the officials said.

Zhongxing-1A was designed and manufactured by the China Academy of Space Technology under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.

The launch was the 146th mission for the Long March carrier rocket series.
