A result of years of research by Microsoft for highly mobile small form-factor PCs to address the computing needs of rapidly increasing mobile workforce, UMPC's is the latest addition to the category of mobile PCs.

Combined with the power of the Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system and other innovative technologies from Microsoft and its partners, UMPC's are simple to use and offer better features compared to its previous counterparts. Its inbuilt Touch Pack for Windows XP software optimizes the touch screen user interface for UMPCs to simplify navigation and ease-of-use while on the go, says the MS website.

To help software developers program UMPC-optimized applications, Microsoft has created Mobile PC Developer Center that contains user interface (UI) design guidelines, technical articles, sample code, tools and utilities, Ultra Mobile PC Display Emulator being one of them.

Ultra Mobile PC Display Emulator

UMPC Display Emulator is a free tool from Microsoft to test an application's layout and screen behavior as it appears on an ultra-mobile PC. A flexible tool for developers, the emulator can provide an easy way to check screen layout and behavior at the screen resolution of a UMPC.

The UMPC Display Emulator sets the screen to the resolution of an ultra-mobile PC (800 × 480), while leaving the monitor's physical resolution at its current setting. The tool can be used to reflect how your GUI program will appear in the typical resolution of an ultra-mobile PC, and runs successfully on Windows XP with .NET Framework 2.0 installed and requires about 5 MB of disk space.
