BANGALORE: Computer Associates joins the open source band-wagon by announcing the availability of its popular proprietary database software, Ingres to the open source world.

Ingres has been one of the popular database software amongst developers and enterprises, with about more than 25,000 users globally, owing to its features and user friendliness. Ingres gets an edge over MySQL and Postgres, the other two database products in the open source market as it is considered more suitable for large-scale applications.

Some analysts are of the view that CA's motive behind this move could be to generate more money out of Ingres, for more users may adopt it as it becomes open source. However, some others are of the view that more than any monetary benefit CA has taken this step to build a positive image for itself in the community. Whether it does any good to CA or not, has to be watched but the move is certainly another feather in the open source movement's cap.
