C-DAC intros BOSS GNU/Linux advanced server

KOLKATA, INDIA: BOSS (Bharat Operating System Solutions) GNU/Linux advanced server developed by C-DAC (Centre for development of advanced computing) was released by Dr. Debesh Das, Minister-In-Charge, Department of Information Technology, Government of West Bengal at India soft 2009 in Kolkata on Friday.

BOSS, a debian based GNU/Linux distribution developed by C-DAC is a deliverable of National Resource Centre for Free/Open Source Software (NRCFOSS) in order to benefit the use of Free/Open Source Software throughout India.

BOSS GNU/Linux activities are co-ordinated by C-DAC Chennai centre, led by M.R.Rajagopalan and a team of 25 engineers who are involved in developing the BOSS GNU/ Linux operating system.

S.Ramakrishnan, director general, C-DAC, said: "BOSS is now being widely accepted by a number of government and academic institutions. Above all through NRCFOSS and the IOSN South Asia node, CDAC is also reaching out to other nations in this region in promoting and adopting FOSS. C-DAC is committed on developing software solutions that are technologically advanced, yet providing value to Indian user community."

He added, "Our constant endeavor to increase the adoption of computing among a wide cross section of Indian users, especially those in government first time users and Indian language centric users. NRCFOSS has achieved another milestone by launching the advanced server version of BOSS GNU/Linux."

BOSS GNU/Linux has upgraded from Entry level server to advanced server. It supports Intel and AMD x86/x86-64 architecture. BOSS GNU/Linux advanced server has unique features such as Web server, proxy server, Database server, Mail server, Network server, File and Print server, SMS server, LDAP server. BOSS GNU/Linux advanced server is comprised with administration tool such as webmin which is a web based interface, Gadmin, PHP myadmin, PHP LDAP admin, PG admin.

The key feature of BOSS GNU/Linux server is the ability to remotely control the server using vinagre GUI application. It also contains wireshark GUI tool for network protocol analyzer, nmap utility for network exploration or security auditing. The Snort utility in BOSS GNU/Linux server is utilized for network intrusion prevention and detection system utilizing a rule-driven language, which combines the benefits of signature, protocol and anomaly based inspection methods.

Support to BOSS GNU/Linux is available through a network of C-DAC centres spread across the country.
