Beating the expectations of many analysts, Flipkart made a turnaround defeating its arch-rival Amazon, during the Big Billion Day (BBD) sale in October.

Continuing the same trend, Flipkart Internet Pvt. Ltd raked in gross sales of more than Rs 2,600 crore in both December and January, thanks to bumper smartphone sales, according to a Livemint report. On the other hand, Amazon Seller Services Pvt. Ltd generated gross sales of roughly Rs 2,300 crore, on average.

Over the last two month, monthly sales at Flipkart have increased dramatically from Rs 2,000 crore levels that they hovered around before BBD. Before BBD, Amazon was ahead of Flipkart in terms of gross sales.

A Flipkart spokeswoman spoke to Livemint and said, “As a policy, we do not comment on sale numbers. However, as a market leader, we continue to grow the e-commerce market in India through India-centric innovations and by continuously improving customer experience. We are focused on delighting our customers across the length and breadth of the country by bringing the best selection of quality brands and products at affordable price points.”

The report also says that Amazon witnessed a growth of 124 percent in 2016, compared to the same period in 2015.

An Amazon spokesperson said, "We continued to see this momentum in January and Amazon.in’s first Great Indian Sale in January 2017 set new benchmarks in daily units, showing a 200 percent growth over a regular business day."

Apparently, Flipkart’s clear lead is being attributed to the new CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy. The report says, "He was the architect of the company’s BBD win over Amazon and was rewarded by the board led by Lee Fixel, his former boss at Tiger and the most influential voice at Flipkart."

Considering the latest jump, Flipkart is currently in an assertive space to raise a much-needed fund.
