Build infrastructure, Indian IT Industry tells Govt

MUMBAI, INDIA: Two-thirds of the top executives from Indian IT industry have called for creation of better infrastructure as the most important task before the new government.

This is revealed in a research conducted by CyberMedia’s flagship publication Dataquest in its June 30 issue. Nearly one-fourth of the CEOs would like the government to handle slowdown effectively.

The chief executives from the exports-oriented companies sought extension of STPI scheme and other incentives for exports as the top policy measure from the government to help the industry, hit badly by global slowdown.

However, the IT companies focused on doing business in India said government should deploy IT in all areas of governance to boost domestic demand. The IT CEOs wanted the government to focus on enhancing citizen services, security and inter-governmental functions

The industry was unanimous in asking for government intervention in the education system to maintain and improve India's skilled manpower pipeline. Indian IT professionals are seen as a major competitive advantage by the industry.

“The message is loud and clear. The IT CEOs feel creating better infrastructure is most critical to the growth of the economy,” says Pradeep Gupta, chairman of CyberMedia.

Acceleration of roll out of broadband and WiMax is also seen as a big contributor to the infrastructure by the Indian IT industry. Rationalization of duty incentives was sought by nearly two-thirds of the industry in a bid to grow the domestic IT market.

Measures to boost local manufacturing and legislation to tackle cyber crime and cyber terrorism featured among the last two priorities for the IT industry.

The survey saw participation of top executives from 22 IT companies with varied interests: IT services, BPO, hardware and package software.

The CEOs who participated in the research represented 24/7 Customer; Aegis; Aptech; Cisco; Cognizant; EMC; Exl Services; Geometric; Hexaware Technologies; iGate; Infosys; Intelenet Global; KPIT Cummins; Microsoft India; Nucleus Software; Perot Systems; Polaris; Steria India; Tata Technologies; Tulip Telecom and Zensar.
