To gather support from public to create awareness about deforestation from coal mining in central India, Greenpeace has released an innovative Facebook application with a personalised video to engage social media audience.

Greenpeace India has been working on protecting forests in Central India from coal mining since last year.

Coal mining in Central Indian forests is destroying the habitat of the endangered tiger, other wildlife and displacing lakhs of forests dwellers, said Greenpeace.

The new application seeks to encourage users to become protectors of forests themselves. It makes the user a 'Forest Hero' by embedding his picture in several parts of a short film as a saviour of forests.

Through the new application Greenpeace is seeking to take their supporters to the next level by giving them a taste of what it feels like to save forests and share their heroic act with their friends.

"Once the individual gives the application access to his profile picture or uploads one, the picture is resized and colour corrected and carefully embedded in the transparent areas," said a volunteer from Greenpeace India.

A Greenpeace study found that coal mining in 13 coalfields in Central India threatens over 1.1 million hectares of forest- that's almost twice the area of India's top five metros combined!

There are over 40 coalfields in Central India so the area of forest that stands to be destroyed is phenomenal.

The Facebook app, created by Bangalore-based digital services company, Kreata Global, was developed with selected transparent portions in a video and then tracked these areas using Flash technology.

The application creates awareness about deforestation from coal mining in a fun way, said Brikesh Singh, an activist from Greenpeace and further added, we hope the larger message stays with the audience that our forests need heroes now more than ever.

According to Greenpeace, the Facebook application has used Fluid responsive website designing using parallax technology to make the microsite adaptable and the Facebook Graph API development to enable effortless connectivity between the microsite and Facebook also facilitating image transfer from Facebook to the microsite.
